SUMMARY:DG: Attorneys Backstage: Pulling Back the Curtain on Copyright Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, Director of Business Affairs Jessica Lit\, Esq. and Business Affairs Consultant Leesa Fenderson\, Esq. will “pull back the curtain” on various aspects of the business of writing for the theatre. \nThis month the attorneys will “pull back the curtain on” copyright fundamentals. As we embark on a new year\, the attorneys want to get back to basics. Copyright basics to be specific. Ownership of your copyright is the most important aspect of protecting your work as a theatre writer. It is the reason why theatre writers cannot collectively bargain\, but it is also the reason why theatre writers maintain sole discretion over changes to their work. \nIn this session\, the attorneys will deep dive into copyright fundamentals like what is and is not copyrightable\, why registration is important\, co-authorship\, the work-for-hire doctrine\, fair use\, and more! Whether you know nothing about copyright or think you know all there is to know – this session will have something for everyone! \nVIRTUAL and FREE event for DG Members.

We collaborate with NYC communities to confront oppression at all levels\, using Augusto Boal’s theatre practices and Paulo Freire’s liberatory pedagogy as powerful tools for systemic transformation. Our work doesn’t just raise awareness; it demands change. \nWhat we do:\nFoster Solidarity to Ignite Awareness – We create space for members of marginalized communities to build an understanding of the systemic causes of their shared struggles.\nTurn Passion into Action – We equip communities with the tools to drive narratives\, activate discussions\, and challenge oppression.\nShake the Foundations of Power – Through participatory theatre\, we disrupt the status quo and fight for liberatory change. \nOur Guiding Principles:\nLived experience is a form of expertise – Any conversation about injustice must be shaped by those who live it. Their perspectives\, experiences\, and leadership drive our work.\nParticipation and play are vital in coalition building – Live and interactive performances create space for real dialogue and shared imagining of radical transformation.\nArt is a catalyst for rebellion – Community-driven theatre isn’t just entertainment—it’s resistance. \nThis is more than theatre\, it’s a rehearsal for the revolution.
